Delorean cooling system technical information.

How many time have we been asked about the cooling system on the car as far as over heating and preventing that from happening.
Well it's really no different that any aluminum block engine that if it's over heated it may warp or heads or blow a head gasket. Neither one means the end of the engine. The heads should be removed, checked for warping and straightness.
I would leave this up to the head professionals.
To help prevent the engine from over heating I would start here with these pointers.

#1. Make sure the cooling system is filled with the normal 50/50 mixture of antifreeze  and water. Normally the coolant bottle would be about 1/2 full after the engine has
run and the coolant has settled down.
coolant-tank-fill.jpg (45429 bytes)
#2. Make sure the 2 wires going to the otterstat are plugged in and make sure they are not shorted out to any thing as best you can and the wires going into the connector are secure. Sometimes the wires will fray and come loose in the connector.  If it hasn't been replaced in years or looks corroded around it, then I would replace it. $20.00. This is what activates The Fan Fix for the radiator fans.

#3. Now I would warm up the engine to normal operating temperature and bleed the air out of the lines manually first with the nipple on top of the water pump.
Attach a  clear hose you can see into and pick it up at any local hardware store. Buy about a 3 foot length, insert the one on the nipple coming out of the top of the pump and the other into a glass jar. While the engine is running and hot,  open the bleeder screw and bleed out the air then wait a minuet and do this again till the no more sputtering of air is coming out. Once this is done then you can add the automatic bleeder as shown on the engine cooling page..

#4.At this point providing the otterstat sensor is operating properly the radiator fans should be turning on and off just above the second mark on the gauge. If not then the otterstat may be bad. It could be just old or it may be cracked as shown in the picture.

#5. If the fans are turning on properly, then now would be the time to upgrade the
fan relay  system to The Fan Fix. This is the #1 upgrade to the radiator fail and fan relay to make the system reliable for the future. The second picture shows the shows
where it goes. It replaces the fan fail mod and the fan relay.

All of the above is predicated on the above that the water pump, radiator and all hoses are ok.
